Description :Uncommon local species, numbers fluctuate seasonally. Length 53cm. One of the few all-black (red and green sheen) wading birds. Eats seeds and insects. Has a soft call.
Typical Habitat :Freshwater wetlands and pasture.
Distribution :Common Australia wide, except the arid interior.
Migration :Nomadic / non breeding in local area. Main breeding season, February to May and September to December, variable.
