Description : | Common, M. australis is dependant on specific nursery sites to rear it's young, only 5 nursery roosts are known. Weight 7-9g ; forearm 36-40mm. Eats insects. Predators are Green Tree Frogs, Pythons, Owls and Foxes. |
Typical Habitat : | Rainforest, Melaleuca swamps, open forest, and mangroves. Shares roosting sites with the Common Bentwing Bat and may form mixed dense clusters. Often flies along tracks and roads through rainforest. |
Distribution : | Coastal belt from Cape York to Taree N.S.W. In it's southern distribution it is dependant upon the larger nursery colony of Common Bentwing Bats to provide the warmth needed to rear it's young. In the north this association is less common. |
