Description : | Common local species. Length 94cm. Water bird that doesn’t float but swims with only it's head and neck out of the water, spears fish with it's beak. Feathers become waterlogged and often seen on the bank or on a post with wings spread to dry in the sun. |
Typical Habitat : | Lakes, rivers, swamps, occasionally off shore, beaches and river flats. Nest are usually clustered in trees leaning over the water. When disturbed, the flightless young, dive from their nest into the water. May breed next to or mixed in with cormorants. |
Distribution : | Widespread except for arid interior. |
Migration : | Resident / breeding. Found on Magnetic Island, Many Peaks Range, Bohle River and mangroves near Flower St., South Townsville. Main breeding season, July to April, variable. |
