Description : | Rare in the north. Body 16cm ; Tail 11cm ; Weight 120g ; Fur blackish brown. Diurnal. Eats mainly grass and sedge. Nest burrows up to 1m deep, when watterlogged, it nest in tussock grass. Makes tunnels through dense grass, sedge and heath.Litter size3to5. |
Typical Habitat : | Swamps,thick vegetation along creeks and dense vegetation outside rainforest.Requires more specific habitat than most rats,makes it vulnerable to clearing,grazing and fire.A good indicator of the quality of rehabilition of natural habitat at ground level. |
Distribution : | Northern population, Cooktown to Cape Upatart. Southern population, Maryborough QLD. to Kangroo Island S.A. and Tasmania. |
