Description :Common local species. Length 50cm. Sharp-billed diving bird, with a duration of 30 seconds. Makes barking and rattling sounds. Eats only live food, fish, tadpoles, freshwater crayfish and other aquitic invertebrates.
Typical Habitat :Fresh/salt water, lakes, lagoons, estuaries and bays.
Distribution :Eastern Australia and western coast.
Migration :Resident / breeding. Ross River Dam and Serpentine Lagoon, occasionally visits the Town Common. Main breeding season, November to January.
