Description : | Common local species. Length 61cm. The female is the worlds largest wader. Sandfly Creek supports an over-wintering population of national significance. |
Typical Habitat : | Mangroves, estuaries, mud flats and sand flats. |
Distribution : | Uncommon to coastal areas. |
Migration : | Summer migrant to Australia. Breeds in Taiwan, Philippines and P.N.G. Juveniles don't return to their breeding sites until they are more than a year old. Some adults may spend winter here if they have not gained enough body fat for overseas migration. |
