Description :Common local species. Length 61cm. The female is the worlds largest wader. Sandfly Creek supports an over-wintering population of national significance.
Typical Habitat :Mangroves, estuaries, mud flats and sand flats.
Distribution :Uncommon to coastal areas.
Migration :Summer migrant to Australia. Breeds in Taiwan, Philippines and P.N.G. Juveniles don't return to their breeding sites until they are more than a year old. Some adults may spend winter here if they have not gained enough body fat for overseas migration.
