Description : | Common local species. One of the most abundant hawks in the world. Townsville airport has the highest rate of bird strike in Australia, 85% are Black Kites. Flocks soar effortlessly, and large numbers are seen over cane and bush fires. |
Typical Habitat : | Open plains, tidal wetlands, rubbish dumps, timbered watercourses, abattoirs and stockyards. Nest are a platform of sticks built during the dry season and usually in open woodland. Eats reptiles, insects, carrion and domestic rubbish. |
Distribution : | Common Australia wide, except a coastal strip from central N.S.W. to S.A. border and TAS. |
Migration : | Resident / breeding. Large numbers can be seen at the rubbish dump. Main breeding season, April to December, variable. |
