Description : | Uncommon local species. Length 47cm. Males build large egg incubating mounds made of vegetable matter. Eats berries, seeds, insects, grubs and roots. Call is a loud raucous double crow and gurgles, usually many birds calling at once and often at night. |
Typical Habitat : | Coastal lowland forest, vine scrub and mangroves. |
Distribution : | Common in coastal areas from the Kimberley region W.A., Top End N.T. and Cape York to Rockhampton. The local sub-species M. reinwardt castanotus is endemic, only recorded in Australia. |
Migration : | Resident / breeding at Bluewater Range and Magnetic Island. Main breeding season, September to Feburary. |
