Description :Common local species. Length 24cm. Medium sized waterbird with extra long toes which allows it to walk on floating vegetation. When threatened, the chicks are carried under the wings of an adult. Nests on a pile of floating vegetation.
Typical Habitat :Swamps, lakes and lagoons.
Distribution :Common to the north and east coast.
Migration :Resident / nomadic / breeding. Main breeding season, November to May, variable.
