Description : | Uncommon local species. Large, flightless bird, up to 2m tall. Can be solitary, in family groups or in large flocks. Makes deep drumming sounds. Lays from 9 to 20 eggs on the ground, main nest predators are Goannas, Dingoes and feral pigs. |
Typical Habitat : | Arid inland plains, tropical woodlands. Eats herbage and fruit and sometimes insects, swallows stones to help grind up woody food in the gizzard. |
Distribution : | Locally abundant throughout mainland Australia. Endemic, only recorded in Australia. |
Migration : | Resident / breeder. Scattered along Hervey Range and occasionally in the drier country west of Paluma. Main breeding season, April to October. |
