Description :Common local species. Length 60cm. Roosts on ground in large camps. Eats submerged vegetation in deep water by diving. Call is a distinctive shrill and whistling. Has a long neck and legs.
Typical Habitat :Deep vegetated lagoons and swamps and flooded grasslands.
Distribution :Common to northern and eastern Australia.
Migration :Resident / breeding ( Town Common and swamps around Oonoonba ). Biggest daytime roosts are south of the city, around the Ross River Dam. Main breeding season, February to April.
