Description : | Endangered due to loss of habitat. Flightless, up to 1.5m tall. Can be aggressive, with a powerful kick and long sharp claws. Important rainforest speices for their dispersal of plant seeds. Eats fallen fruit from trees, vines and carrion. |
Typical Habitat : | Rainforest, preferring stream banks and clearings. |
Distribution : | North Queensland. Casuarius casuarius johnsonii is endemic, only recorded in Australia. |
Migration : | Resident / breeder. Paluma Range and Bluewater State Forest. Lays around 4 eggs on forest litter, which the male incubates for two months. Main breeding season, June to October. |
