Description :Common local species, Townsville's most common duck. Length 63cm. Nest in grass at the edge of water, lays up to 10 eggs in a softly feathered bowl. Eats worms and invertebrates. Call is harsh quacks and a strong laughing call.
Typical Habitat :Deep, permanent swamps, open water and wet paddocks.
Distribution :Australia wide.
Migration :Resident / nomad / breeding. Main breeding season, March to May and July to October.
