This exhibition celebrates the artistic career of one of Australia’s most important printmakers of the twentieth century, Jessie Traill. Embracing the medium of etching in the early 1900s, Traill forged a radical path for printmaking in Australia through the duality of her vision. Depicting the beauty of the natural environment alongside dynamic images of industry, her lyrical responses show a profound understanding of the dilemma that requires nature to be sacrificed in order for the modern world to progress.

Drawn entirely from the National Gallery of Australia’s outstanding collection, Stars in the river: the prints of Jessie Traill examines the various facets of Traill’s printed oeuvre.

In his first major solo exhibition in twenty years, Richard Lane unveils a new series of ‘post-painterly abstraction’ works, extending upon his explorations in this field in the 1980s and 1990s. Inspired by the Townsville landscape and the ground coverings found in his own backyard - which backs directly on to the picturesque Ross River - Lane’s works entice and challenge viewers with bold veils of colour.

Lane’s work is represented in public, private and corporate collections in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Germany, the UK, Singapore, Brazil, Italy, Sweden, Holland and Japan.

Isabelle Gair-Hemsley

Exhibition dates:
2 April - 30 April 2015

Concerned with the plight of our feathered friends, Gair-Hemsley joins her two loves together – art and wildlife – producing paintings with soul, beauty and flamboyant colour. Through this medium, Gair-Hemsley hopes she can inform and educate communities about the care and conservation of wildlife - while having fun in the process.

Growing up, Gair-Hemsley was taught to tread lightly on this earth, and to give back, not to just take. To this point, Gair-Hemsley is an avid bird watcher and conservationist.

Kirwan State High School students work with artists Jo Lankester and Aicey Zaro

Exhibition dates:
3 April - 29 April 2015

This exhibition of prints by Kirwan State High School students forms part of the Young Indigenous Printmakers program – an initiative offered free of charge to Townsville secondary schools that targets Indigenous high school students.

Aicey Zaro visits participating schools to introduce printmaking and explore Indigenous culture with students, which is followed by a one-day intensive printmaking workshop at Umbrella Studio contemporary arts with artists Jo Lankester and Aicey Zaro. Students investigate lino printing, carving and editioning before producing their own print which illustrates their identity and culture. The prints are subsequently exhibited on a rotational basis at either The Galleria, Riverway Arts Centre, Perc Tucker Regional Gallery, or Umbrella Studio.

Townsville City Council, in collaboration with Umbrella Studio contemporary arts, initiates and funds the Young Indigenous Printmakers. The program seeks to foster and promote artistic development and engage local Indigenous high school students to work with printmaking artists.

Each month The Vault Shop will feature an exhibition of small works for sale by north Queensland artists. In April 2015, The Vault Shop displays the exhibition Glimpse by Sandy Fisher from 4 April to 7 May 2015.

Sandy Fisher is a local artist who practises a variety of printmaking techniques throughout her work. She is passionate about the environment and her work provides glimpses of this.

The exhibition Glimpse is about the “everyday extraordinary” that can be seen in nature or along a street. Whether that is the simple beauty of a seed pod or the faces that pass by, Glimpse asks you to take the time to look closely, to listen, to open your heart, and become aware of the details.

Exhibition dates:
7 April - 3 May 2015

To be officially opened by:
Sandra Tutty
2pm Saturday 11 April 2015

Kate Ross has been painting for eight years and cannot imagine her life without an art studio; mess and all! Ross didn’t set out to become an environmental artist but is happy with this serendipitous turn of events. For thousands of years, rainforests have provided untold benefits for the environment: the great wetlands support high levels of biological diversity and are among the richest ecosystems on earth.

Living on the edge of the rainforest, Ross has grown to love and respect the great ecosystem which sustains so much wonderful, diverse animal life. She believes it is imperative to showcase this love through her artwork. Ross’ other landscapes displayed in this exhibition are complementary to this; moving away from the rainforest and towards the more coastal areas of Townsville.

In 1965 photojournalist Tim Page was with the Australian troops in Vietnam when they landed in Biên Hòa. Like many of those he photographed, Page was barely out of his teens, and filled with the bravado of youth. Armed with a bag of film and his camera Page captured some of the most iconic images of the Vietnam War before he was gravely injured and sent to the US to recuperate.

Diggers in the Nam includes a selection of 20 silver gelatin prints, which have been printed as a limited edition box set by Chris Reid of Blanco Negro, one of the last master printers in Australia. The exhibition is presented to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the deployment of the first Australian battlegroup to Vietnam.
