Born in Sydney in 1943 into an artistic family, Pamela Griffith is an acclaimed printmaker and painter of exceptional skill. Over the past 30 years she has produced over 300 editions of etchings and lithographs, capitalising on her undoubted talent as a draughtswoman. She currently also produces some 20 to 30 major paintings each year, principally in oils, but including acrylics, watercolours and pastels where the subject is better suited to those media. Her subject matter ranges across still life, landscape (often with an environmental theme) and portraiture.

In this suite of works, Griffith’s interest in the Australian landscape and native flora and fauna is brought to life through her delicate and intricate mark-making and interesting compositional choices. The exhibited works are reproductions of prints that form part of a large gift of 114 works (which includes various printmaking techniques such as intaglio and planographic) which was made by the artist’s daughter, Selena Griffith, in 2015. The body of works has been donated to the City of Townsville Art Collection through the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program.

During Term 4 2015, students from Calvary Christian College worked with local artist, Ben Green to create an A3 advertisement using digital capturing and editing techniques. Students were tasked with creating a photographic or computer generated image to communicate and advertise an aspect of God in Christianity. The brief was to make their promotion eye-catching and quirky; to portray their chosen message successfully to a mass audience. To communicate their concept the students incorporated elements of symbolism into their works, focusing on incorporating the text of their chosen quotes or psalms.

Ben walked students through the process of digitally capturing their images using a D-SLR camera and various in-camera functions to affect their images, such as manual points of focus, manual exposure, depths of field, exposure, composition (rule of thirds), and shutter speed. They were shown tips and tricks when processing their post-capture works through Adobe Photoshop.

As a result, the students have created individual works to be exhibited in The Galleria at Riverway Arts Centre.

The exhibition Our Country - Our Way features works by artists from the Kith & Kinth Artworks group, who are artists living with intellectual, physical disabilities and mental health issues. Through Kith & Kin, the artists are given the opportunity to express themselves through the Artworks program, facilitated by Ann Burke, in a range of art forms. Through this process participants gain renewed hope, confidence, improved motor skills, coordination, and self-esteem.

The artists have been working since 2015 on an exhibition which is a response to one of Australia’s greatest poems: My Country written by Dorothea Mackellar. Each of the artists was given a different verse of the poem to reflect upon and depict in their individual artworks.

Kith & Kin, meaning friends and family, was established in Townsville in 1981 by a group of parents who could not find the kind of support needed for their children living with disabilities. These children had severe intellectual disabilities and struggled to access other services often due to the challenging nature of their disability. Their parents banded together and with community support, formed a voluntary minding group. Kith & Kin evolved and innovated from this model to become the diverse support and learning service it is today, providing suitable and sustainable all abilities mental health support; offering a range of opportunities for people with psychiatric, physical and intellectual disabilities.
