Imagining Place investigates the cultural journeys of explorers and the unique qualities of ‘place’ in North Queensland. Artist - explorer Sandi Hook immerses herself in the natural environment, following paths crossed by early explorers to reveal a new sense of the intimacy between place and pathfinder, past and present. The shattering and reconstruction of vessels emerges as metaphor for colonial incursion, colonisation and containment of place.

Artist-In-Schools
The Cathedral School of St Anne and St James with Sandi Hook

Exhibition dates:
3 February - 8 March 2015

Artist-In-Schools is a Gallery Services Creative Classrooms program that employs local artists to work with students and teachers in Townsville high schools to develop artwork for an exhibition outcome at either Pinnacles Gallery or Perc Tucker Regional Gallery.

During Term 4, students from The Cathedral School of St Anne and St James worked with Sandi Hook and their teacher Tania Townson to explore Surrealism.

Students learnt how to develop a concept, introduce figurative elements to the work, and investigated scale, mood, style, colour, composition, and various paint application techniques. The workshops have resulted in the exhibition on display in The Galleria.

The Townsville Identities exhibition is a collaborative partnership between Artworks! Kith and Kin and the Dancenorth Community and Education Team. In September 2014 an Arts Festival of different creative and theatrical workshops was held at the School of Arts Building for the first time. The festival was held during the week preceding Disability Action Week. One component of the Arts Festival was to invite some well-known Townsville Identities to sit for live drawings. This was the first time any of the participants had drawn using an easel and each sitting lasted for 20 to 30 minutes. Most of these artists are in the early stages of artistic development. All of the artists either have a disability or diagnosed mental health issue, and the artists have completed the paintings mostly unassisted or guidance in minor details.

Contemporary technology and Victorian styling will collide in spectacular fashion during The Antipodean Steampunk Show at Pinnacles Gallery.

Introducing Jessie Traill
7.40pm Friday 27 February

This exhibition celebrates the artistic career of one of Australia’s most important printmakers of the twentieth century, Jessie Traill. Embracing the medium of etching in the early 1900s, Traill forged a radical path for printmaking in Australia through the duality of her vision. Depicting the beauty of the natural environment alongside dynamic images of industry, her lyrical responses show a profound understanding of the dilemma that requires nature to be sacrificed in order for the modern world to progress.

Drawn entirely from the National Gallery of Australia’s outstanding collection, Stars in the river: the prints of Jessie Traill examines the various facets of Traill’s printed oeuvre.

Barbara Tankard began painting as a way of expressing her creative side and “letting out a bit of the frustration I was feeling over an injury I had received.”

She explains, “I work in Customer Service at the Townsville City Council and paint as a way to release my creative side. Being in customer service I help people solve their problems, whereas painting helps me solve mine.”

“I have always been crafty, having dabbled in scrapbooking, tapestry work, knitting and sewing. I have an eye for colour and found that I liked the idea of turning a blank canvas into something I could be proud of.”

Over the following nine months, more than 7,500 Australians lost their lives. Join us in reliving the immortal, defining event in Australian history, seen through the eyes of a young digger battling the enemy, himself and the establishment.
